Nutritional Foods for Anemia: Eating Your Way to Better Blood Health

Abstract

Anemia is one of the most widespread nutritional disorders globally and remains a significant public health concern, particularly among women, children, adolescents, and pregnant mothers. The condition is primarily caused by deficiencies of iron, folate, vitamin B12, and other nutrients essential for red blood cell production and oxygen transport. Nutrition plays a central role in both the prevention and management of anemia. Iron-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, pulses, legumes, millets, and green leafy vegetables contribute to healthy hemoglobin formation, while vitamin C-rich fruits enhance iron absorption. Other nutrients, including folate, vitamin B12, vitamin A, copper, and zinc, further support blood health and normal physiological functions. Dietary practices, food fortification, and nutrition education can significantly reduce the burden of anemia. Adopting a balanced diet that combines nutrient-dense foods with healthy lifestyle habits provides a sustainable approach to improving iron status and overall well-being. Promoting awareness of anemia-friendly foods is essential for enhancing public health and reducing nutrition-related health challenges worldwide.
