Abstract
Cervical cancer remains a major public health challenge despite the availability of effective prevention and early detection methods. It is the fourth most common cancer among women globally and caused nearly 350,000 deaths in 2022. While screening coverage exceeds 40–50% in many high-income countries, only about 1.9% of Indian women aged 30–49 years undergo screening, with even lower uptake in rural and low-resource settings. Barriers include limited healthcare access, low awareness, and sociocultural factors. Community medicine plays a crucial role in reducing this burden through population-based strategies such as health education, HPV vaccination, organized screening programs, and community-level screening camps. Strengthening referral systems, integrating prevention into primary healthcare, and using digital health tools can improve early detection, treatment outcomes, and long-term program effectiveness.
