Abstract
Public health nutrition in India has emerged as a major issue in the healthcare sector. It’s a difficult task to provide nutrition-rich, quality food to a large population across the nation. Issues like malnutrition, poverty, poor sanitation, improper diet, lack of awareness, vitamin deficiencies and nutritional education gap cause health issues among a large population. The nutritional deficiencies are responsible for health issues like diabetes, heart diseases, obesity and osteoarthritis. To overcome the nutritional public health problems, the Indian government has launched many programs and schemes like Pradhan Mantri Matritva Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), National Health Mission (NHM), Mid‑day Meal (MDM), Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), National Nutrition Mission (NNM), Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls (RGSEAG) or Sabla Scheme and Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY). Ground-level health workers like Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM) are creating awareness on proper nutrition and sanitation at the village level to make the schemes of the Indian government successful. Overall, the public health issues due to nutrition can be overcome by creating awareness, making nutrient-rich foods available, and promoting proper food handling techniques among Indians.
