Abstract

English has emerged as the dominant language of scientific research and global discourse, serving as a bridge among diverse linguistic and cultural communities. It functions not merely as a medium of communication but also as a tool for constructing a collective global identity in academia and beyond. The expansion of English in the scientific world has democratized access to knowledge, fostered cross-cultural collaboration, and shaped the ways in which individuals and nations engage with global issues. However, the dominance of English also raises concerns about linguistic inequality and the marginalization of local languages. This paper explores the dual role of English as a catalyst for scientific communication and as a force in shaping global identity, analysing both its empowering and challenging dimensions in the twenty-first century.
