Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as one of the most serious global public health threats, undermining the effectiveness of antibiotics that transformed modern medicine. Driven by the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in human health, animal production, and agriculture, resistant microorganisms are spreading rapidly across healthcare and environmental settings. Bacteria evade antibiotics through genetic mutations, horizontal gene transfer, enzyme production, target modification, efflux pumps, and biofilm formation, leading to multidrug-resistant pathogens that are increasingly difficult to treat. Despite this growing crisis, advances in microbial science are creating new opportunities for antimicrobial discovery. Genome mining, whole-genome sequencing, artificial intelligence, antimicrobial peptides, bacteriophage therapy, CRISPR-based approaches, synthetic biology, and microbiome engineering are accelerating the development of innovative, targeted therapies. Combined with antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, vaccination, rapid diagnostics, and the One Health approach, these technologies offer promising strategies to slow resistance and preserve the effectiveness of existing antibiotics while supporting the discovery of safer and more sustainable antimicrobial solutions.
