Abstract
Rising healthcare costs and brand-driven marketing often leave patients paying more than necessary for the same treatment. This article explores how informed medicine procurement can empower patients to make smarter, safer, and more economical choices. Through examples—from antifungal soaps to life-saving biologics—it explains the key differences between branded drugs, generics, and biosimilars, and why substitution must be approached with both awareness and caution. Drawing on WHO, USFDA, and CDSCO guidelines, the piece highlights real-world pitfalls such as pharmacy-led brand switching, pricing disparities, and public misconceptions about drug quality. Practical tips and a five-question checklist guide readers in verifying composition, price, and medical approval before accepting alternatives. Ultimately, the article calls for patient awareness as a cornerstone of affordable and responsible healthcare—where informed choices protect both health and wallet.
